Some free advice!
As much as we'd love you to choose Coastal Dog Walkers to walk your dog there are several local companies to pick from and to be fair the vast majority of them are great. Here are a few things you should think about when having a look around for a dog walker. Please do your homework before making a final decision as you'll be trusting someone with your beloved family pet, not to mention the keys to your home.
To help you narrow down your choice of dog walker we would advise you speak to them at length and ask them the following 3 questions:
1/ How long have you been doing this?
2/ Are you insured?
3/ How do you collect the dogs, do you use transport at all?
The answer to the first question tells you if you're (potentially) dealing with someone who may be here today and gone tomorrow. If the person hasn't been dog walking for long don't necessarily write them off, we've all got to start somewhere but if you prefer to play it safe then my advice would be to look for someone with a track record that has been trading for at least a year.
The answer to the second question will help let you know if the person is really serious about their business. Any professional dog walker will have their insurance sorted out, it's not prohibitively expensive and is easy to obtain. If you're speaking to someone who's not insured then, to be frank, they're winging it and you may find they're cutting corners elsewhere.
The answer to the third question is crucial in my opinion. There are lots of great dog walking firms (like us!) who use transport to gather up their dogs and then take them for a nice long walk but be aware there are also disreputable people out there who claim they're walking your beloved pet whilst the poor dog spends most of the session caged the back of a van. We have heard several horror stories relating to this exact scenario and we're in no way saying it's a common practice but it does go on. Please dig a little deeper into things if it looks like transport is a key factor in the business model of whoever you're speaking to. Ask them how long the dogs are likely to be in a vehicle - our service area is basically Tynemouth, Cullercoats and a small part of North Shields, any dogs collected in our dog walking van are in there for a maximum of 10 minutes. Be wary of anyone who travels large distances to round up their pack!
If you ask those questions and are happy with the replies then go for it! Your relationship with your dog walker could potentially last for years so choosing the right one at the very beginning is best for you, them and your dog.
